Mystic, Connecticut — In honor of Black History Month, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut hosted a joint Business After Hours and YPSocial event at Mystic Seaport Museum on February 24.

After an evening of networking, attendees were invited to an exclusive viewing of “A Spectacle in Motion: The Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World”. This exhibit is in partnership with the New Bedford Whaling Museum, which owns and preserves the ‘grand panorama’ on display.

Dr. Akeia de Barros Gomes, Senior Curator of Maritime Social Histories, provided some context in an introduction to the exhibit and further explained the history of diversity within the whaling industry and the experiences of Black men employed at sea during this time.
