Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a vital American holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated annually on June 19th, it marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
This year, our community has a series of engaging and enlightening events planned to observe Juneteenth. These activities provide an excellent opportunity for residents to learn about and reflect on the significance of this historic day.

Juneteenth Bead Bracelets – Teens

Teens are invited to create bead bracelets celebrating Juneteenth at the Public Library of New London. This creative activity offers a hands-on way to engage with the holiday’s themes and symbols.
Juneteenth Reveal with the City of New London

Join us for the Juneteenth Reveal, where we will unveil the latest additions to the New London Black Heritage Trail. This trail highlights the contributions and resilience of the Black community in New London, Connecticut, spanning over three miles and covering more than 300 years of history. This year, three new markers will be added, including stories of trailblazers like Sara Chaney. The event will feature live muralist Marvin Espy, the NLMHS Choir, the Professor Baldwin Drum Circle, and other cultural performances. Free tours of the trail will be available.

The Public Library of New London will host a screening of the 2023 documentary “Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom.” This film explores the history and continuing significance of Juneteenth, offering a deeper understanding of why this day is celebrated.
Jazz & Poetry Event: Juneteenth Celebration

Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme, CT
Enjoy an afternoon of jazz and poetry on the north grounds of the Florence Griswold Museum. The event will feature the Nat Reeves Jazz Quartet and readings by the Witness Stones Poets Marilyn Nelson, Kate Rushin, Rhonda Ward, and Antoinette Brim-Bell. These poets will present new tributes in verse to those remembered with Witness Stones plaques, which mark sites of former enslavement and indentured servitude in Lyme. Seating is provided, but feel free to bring additional lawn chairs.
As we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, these events offer meaningful ways to learn about the rich history and heritage of the Black community. Whether through historical tours, creative activities, documentaries, or cultural performances, there’s something for everyone to engage with and appreciate.
Please note that the chamber will be closed on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth. We encourage everyone to take part in these local events and join in the celebration of freedom and community.
