Two Generations Strong. Heating Homes Since 2004.

For more than 21 years, R&W Heating Energy Solutions has been more than just a business—it’s been a legacy in the making. What started in January 2004 in Rick and Wanda’s basement, fueled by a background in the oil industry and a modest group of prospective customers, has grown into a trusted, second-generation HVAC company based out of Salem serving hundreds of homes throughout Connecticut with pride, precision, and a customer-first approach.

From the very beginning, their mission has remained unwavering: putting customers before profit. “It’s never about sales,” Rick explains. “It’s always about service and trust. That’s how you build something that lasts.”

Today, R&W is driven by a close-knit team of 12, some of whom have been with the company for 20 years and many for at least six. More than just coworkers, they embody a family-rooted culture founded on loyalty, hard work, and a shared sense of purpose. Rick and Wanda—married 38 years and business partners for 33—have built the company alongside their son and daughter, daughter-in-law, and nephew. Their story is a testament to what’s possible when commitment and care guide every decision.

This hands-on, value-driven culture shines through in every interaction. Technicians take the time to educate homeowners on how their systems operate and what’s needed to keep them running efficiently. Even the office staff receive HVAC training, ensuring every customer’s experience is backed by knowledge and professionalism.

Bringing fresh energy and vision beyond job sites, the next generation now leads R&W into the future. Their son heads Tech2Tech, a unique HVAC training center based at R&W designed to foster long-term technician growth and uphold high industry standards. The center draws apprentices, inspectors, and professionals from across the state, solidifying R&W’s reputation as both an industry leader and educator. His leadership has earned national recognition, including features in HVAC Tactical and appearances at major trade events.

That commitment to quality has earned R&W not just customers—but lifelong relationships. To celebrate their 20th anniversary last year, the company planned a special reception for clients who had been with them for 15 years or more. The guest list quickly grew to over 800 loyal customers, a remarkable milestone that speaks volumes about the trust they’ve cultivated.

“It’s never about sales. It’s always about service and trust. That’s how you build something that lasts.”

Their connection to the broader community has been just as strong. R&W attended their first Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Business After Hours event their founding year at venue Florence Griswold Museum and have remained active Chamber members ever since. Today, they encourage newer team members to attend local events and seize professional development opportunities, helping to carry forward the same community values that shaped the company’s foundation.

Inside the company, positive morale isn’t an afterthought, it’s an intentional part of the plan. From summer appreciation days and performance bonuses to early-release Fridays, R&W ensures employees feel recognized and supported. Customer feedback is regularly shared with the team, serving as a powerful reminder of the impact their work has on families and homes.

Reflecting on the family dynamic, Rick shares: “Every day at 8 A.M., you don’t just see your mother, brother, sister, or father—you see the people you love, all working toward something bigger than themselves. It may not always be the easiest, but patience, respect, and a shared goal—that’s what keeps everything moving.”

Looking ahead, a conversation Rick recently had at a conference still resonates deeply. “An older gentleman asked if it was worth it—passing the business on to my kids,” Rick recalls. “I told him this isn’t just about a name. It’s about maintaining our commitment to quality, ensuring every customer feels cared for, and building something we’re truly proud of. That’s the legacy we live every day and are honored to carry on.”

With more than two decades behind them and a new generation confidently stepping forward, R&W Heating Energy Solutions continues to prove that when a business is fueled by family, it runs on something far stronger than energy alone.

The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut is pleased to announce the creation of a new series titled “Chamber ECT Member Spotlight” designed to honor family-owned small businesses in the region. The Chamber enjoys a membership of approximately 1,300 businesses and organizations, mostly located in eastern Connecticut, with others located in RI, MA, and NY. Over 90% of our members join the Chamber because they want to conduct business in the region. Nationally, there are more than 32 million family businesses (Family Enterprise USA, 2021), and in Connecticut, small businesses employ nearly 48% of the workforce (U.S. Small Business Administration, 2025). The vast majority of our members represent small family-owned businesses. These companies and organizations form the core of the region’s wellbeing. They are employers of our family members and friends. They support our local communities through job creation and property taxes payments, volunteering on boards and agencies which in turn support the important state and municipal services such as our schools, police and fire prevention services – all of which we rely on to maintain a quality of life for our citizens.

Through this spotlight series, we will shine a light on their stories, their resilience, and their vital role in strengthening the region’s social and economic fabric.
