Time is ticking for employers to meet new training requirements under the Time’s Up Act.

The Time’s Up Act, Public Acts 19-16 and 19-93, establishes new rules around training and education concerning sexual harassment. The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT in partnership with Suisman Shapiro, Attorneys at Law, will host training sessions that meet the new requirements on January 16 and 29 in New London and Mystic.

The stricter law stipulates that employers with three or more employees must provide two hours of training and education to all employees, and employers with fewer than three employees must provide training to anyone in a supervisory role. Training must include federal and state statutory provisions concerning sexual harassment and remedies available to victims of sexual harassment.

The law kicked in on October 1, 2019, and mandates that training of new hires be completed within six months and all existing employees must complete training before October 1, 2020.

Under the legislation, employers are required to provide new employees a copy of information regarding the illegality of sexual harassment and remedies available to victims. Employers are also required to provide periodic training to employees every 10 years.

The State’s Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities is charged with providing materials and training employers can use. By visiting ct.gov/CHRO, employers can connect with Sexual Harassment Prevention Resources.  A free online Sexual Harassment Prevention Training fulfills the full requirements of the law, when employees watch the two-hour video. A training certificate can be obtained through the website.

For those who prefer an in-person, interactive experience, Suisman Shapiro will be bringing their legal expertise to the January training sessions hosted in partnership with the Chamber. These sessions cover all the required information in an engaging format and provide employees with the opportunity to ask clarifying questions that help protect your organization.

Training sessions with Suisman Shapiro will be held January 16, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m., at Mitchell College’s Weller Center in New London and January 29, 3-5 p.m., at the Hilton Mystic.  The cost is $25 for Chamber members, with a $5 discount per person for groups of 15 or more. The cost for nonmembers is $35.
