How New London’s Newest Community Addition Is Bringing Healthy Spirits to Life

The New London Community and Recreation Center is officially complete – and with it, a new chapter in wellness, connection, and community begins.

Following a soft opening this June for business and civic leaders, the Center is now set to welcome the public with a full celebration in July. This state-of-the-art facility is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of what happens when vision meets dedication, and partnerships align with purpose.

A Dedication Years in the Making

On June 25, the City of New London hosted a building dedication ceremony at 1 Recreation Way, near Fort Trumbull. The event brought together:

  • The City’s Department of Recreation and Office of Development and Planning
  • Members of the State of Connecticut General Assembly, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, and Department of Economic and Community Development
  • The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut
  • Leadership from the Mashantucket and Eastern Pequot Tribal Nations
  • Founding partners including Chelsea Groton Bank, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital Yale New Haven Health, the Retired Armed Forces Association Inc., Breezeline Business, ECHO (Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities), and BlueForge Alliance
  • Construction firm Downes Construction Company, LLC and project manager Brailsford & Dunlavey
  • New London High School Alumni Sports Hall of Famers
  • And over 200 community members from New London and beyond

Mayor Mike Passero and Director of Development and Planning Felix Reyes led the the ceremony, sharing the story behind the years of hard work – from convincing City Council, to securing funding through the state’s Community Investment Fund, that made the dream of a community hub a reality, where “every kid from New London” has a home.

Vice President Megan Gilbert shared congratulations on behalf of the Chamber, citing the Chamber’s and Center’s parallel missions of creating a sense of belonging, fostering vibrant communities where people want to live and work, and where businesses want to invest and stay.
