Every immigrant to the U.S. has a different story to tell with some common threads. Running through each immigrant’s decision to leave home and family is the promise of greater opportunity and a better quality of life. Each story also includes the challenges of moving to a new country and navigating the culture, business environment, and immigration process.

My own story of immigrating to the US includes many instances where I would have made missteps without the help and guidance of some wonderful people. In a new place with few connections, there were many challenges in navigating opportunities and making the most of my sincere desire to succeed in my new country.

It is for this reason and many others that the Chamber is reaching out to immigrant entrepreneurs and professionals to be a resource in the business community and to connect them with others who share this new American experience.  To this end, on September 16, we are inviting immigrant entrepreneurs and professionals to a night of networking and camaraderie hosted by Rebeka Fresh Pasta in East Lyme from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

It is a point of pride for Americans that our country continues to draw people from around the world. As a nation we have created an economy that is robust and welcomes new growth, where hard working immigrants see the opportunity to build a successful business and raise a family.

Eastern Connecticut is home to over 50,000 immigrants – about 7% of the region’s population—and immigrants in our region are 7% more likely to be entrepreneurs. All told there are 1,835 immigrant entrepreneurs in eastern Connecticut. Immigrants contribute across industries in our region, with $1.4 billion in spending power and $597.4 million in taxes paid.

We look forward to establishing this networking group for immigrants, discovering more about the contributions they are making, and learning how we can support their successes. All immigrants of any nationality are welcome to join us for this interesting evening. You may do so by registering at ChamberECT.com/events or contacting the Chamber at 860-701-9113.
