Located in Stonington, Whale Tail Driftwood is the passion project of Bruce Chamberlain, a family-law attorney local to eastern Connecticut. The vision for Chamberlain’s recently opened artisan furniture studio began 20 years ago, when he found himself picking up pieces of driftwood along the shores of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Fishers Island, NY.
From that point onward, Chamberlain took to reimagining his driftwood finds into functional furniture, with the help of a friend and carpenter, Paul McMasters. It didn’t take long for him to trade in his living room for a dedicated showroom.
“Eventually I had so many tables and mirrors that my house could not hold them,” Chamberlain says, “everyone who saw them said they would love to buy them; so, the studio was born.”
Chamberlain attributes the success of his small business to the natural beauty of the driftwood. “Everyone sees something different in the images of every piece, just like the images in clouds.” The studio currently crafts one-of-a-kind, glass-topped tables and mirrors.
