The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Military Community Support Award: Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut and Ocean Beach Park. These two organizations have shown unwavering dedication to honoring and supporting the military community in Eastern Connecticut. Their commitment to service, community engagement, and creating a welcoming environment for military personnel and their families is truly commendable.

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut: Building More Than Homes

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut has long been a pillar of support for active-duty service members, veterans, first responders, and military families in our region. Through innovative programs like the R.E.D. Friday Veteran’s Build, which was launched in September 2023 to honor the anniversary of September 11, Habitat has created a space for the military community to connect, volunteer, and contribute positively to society. These builds have grown into a monthly initiative, accumulating over 125 volunteer hours since the first event, with involvement from various groups like the US Navy Sub School, USO, and more.

The organization’s partnership with the US Navy Sub School in Groton is particularly noteworthy, providing mentoring opportunities for sailors through group activities, volunteer work in Habitat’s ReStores, and on construction sites. This collaboration even extends to special projects such as the planned US Navy All Women’s Build, demonstrating Habitat’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment within the military community.

One active-duty volunteer expressed the significance of such involvement, highlighting how volunteering not only strengthens community ties but also enhances leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—qualities that are valued in both military and civilian life. The sense of unity and purpose fostered by Habitat’s initiatives goes beyond building homes; it builds stronger communities.

Ocean Beach Park: A Day of Sun, Sand, and Service

Under the dedicated leadership of General Manager Dave Sugrue, Ocean Beach Park has become a cherished retreat for the military community. Each August, Ocean Beach Park opens its gates free of charge to active-duty service members, veterans, and their families, welcoming over 550 military personnel and their loved ones this year alone. This year marked the 7th Annual Military Appreciation Day, a celebration of service and sacrifice, featuring activities such as a 5K fun run and a special ceremony honoring CT Wartime Medal recipients and active-duty Special Action Award recipients.

Ocean Beach Park’s commitment to making this day memorable extends to every detail, from providing free use of the boardwalk and stage for the ceremony to organizing vendor setups that offer military discounts and information. This initiative not only offers a day of relaxation and fun but also strengthens the bonds between military families and the broader community, fostering a spirit of gratitude and recognition.

Recognizing Individual Excellence: Service Person of the Year

In addition to recognizing organizations that support the military community, the Chamber will also honor an outstanding individual for their exceptional service. This year,  Musician First Class (MU1) Durie, United State Coast Guard Band, has been named Service Person of the Year for his significant contributions to the local community through volunteerism and leadership.

MU1 Durie has displayed an unwavering commitment to the local community by volunteering over 60 hours recently to support local school music programs, enriching the lives of school-aged children and fostering their passion for musical excellence. This dedication to community service has been consistent, with MU1 Durie having contributed more than 300 volunteer hours since 2020. These efforts have significantly bolstered the positive image of the Coast Guard in the community and have inspired countless students to pursue their musical aspirations.

MU1 Durie’s exemplary volunteer work extends beyond just time and effort; it embodies the values of leadership, service, and community engagement. By serving as a role model for both military and civilian communities, MU1 Durie has helped to bridge gaps and build stronger, more connected neighborhoods. Their sustained commitment to fostering a love for music and supporting youth development in the community is a testament to the impact one individual can make.

Celebrating Community Heroes

Both Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut, Ocean Beach Park, and MU1 Durie have demonstrated exceptional commitment to supporting the military community. Their efforts make a tangible difference, whether by building homes that foster a sense of belonging, creating events that celebrate service and sacrifice, or inspiring the next generation through education and mentorship. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to these deserving award recipients.

Join us in honoring these outstanding contributors at the Military Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Mystic Marriott Hotel and Spa. Let’s come together to show our gratitude and support for those who serve our community and country.
