Where heirloom apples don’t just have taste—they have heart at their core.

Holmberg Orchards has been rooted in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, since the 1930s. What began with Swedish immigrants Adolph and Hulda Holmberg in 1896 raising vegetables and chickens has grown into a flourishing farm nurtured by five generations of the family. Today, the youngest Holmbergs are growing up among the orchards, carrying forward a legacy of care, innovation, and deep respect for the land.

Although apples were part of the farm since the late 1800s, the family shifted their focus primarily to orchards officially in 1935. Just three years later, the hurricane of 1938 devastated much of the crop, but the Holmbergs replanted with determination. Under the leadership of Adolph’s grandson Richard, the farm introduced hardier apple varieties and pioneered the now-beloved pick-your-own tradition that continues to attract visitors year after year. Richard and Diane still lend a hand around the farm, but it’s their son Russell who now owns and runs the business—blending family tradition with fresh ideas to keep the orchard thriving.

Whether planting on the tractor or pouring in the wine barn, Russell is hands-on. Two decades ago, Russell expanded into winemaking and cider production, introducing tastings, flights, and slushies that showcase the orchard’s bounty.

Continuing education has always been part of the family’s values, and Russell continues that commitment like his father, attending domestic and international fruit and vegetable conferences regularly. Because of this, the orchard has incorporated high-density planting techniques and systems like the AI-powered packing line, and their team is able to produce over 38 apple varieties alongside peaches, nectarines, pears, and berries.

Despite changes year after year, the farm’s heart remains the family and the land. Russell and his wife Christine, who works at Yale University supporting cancer research through grants, are raising their two children on the property, instilling the same respect for the farm that has been passed down for generations. Their kids’ love for animals even inspired the addition of pet goats for visitors to meet.

“Every season reminds me that we’re here to care for this land and the story of the farm runs deeper than myself. My kids won’t be expected to work on the farm, but I hope one day they realize just how lucky they are to have been raised here. That’s the same way I’ve grown to feel from my ancestors and parents,” says Russell.

A recent moment—sharing an apple with a visiting utility worker—captured that philosophy: the simple power of food bringing people together to enjoy the fruit of the labor many hands have produced. A fun fact: two of the founding apple trees still thrive today, and you can see them just past the Avery property, also carrying historic charm.

Every season reminds me that we’re here to care for this land and the story of the farm runs deeper than myself.

As you wander the orchard aisles, there is something for every visitor. Guests can stroll up to 60 acres of pick-your-own fields, explore the great pumpkin patch, navigate the corn maze, enjoy a tractor ride (+ see one or two-colored ones, dedicated to Russell’s kids), browse the farm market with dozens of baked goods, make a pitstop at the wine and hard cider barn, plus take in distant views of the Thames River. Altogether, Holmberg Orchards welcomes thousands each year, supported by a dedicated team of about 25 seasonal staff, making it a beloved destination for both locals and travelers alike.

With each harvest, Holmberg Orchards proves that it is a “holm” to more than a farm—it’s a living legacy, with a story behind every seed.
